Collection: How to Measure Up for a New Door Size
DoorOutlet recognizes the challenge of finding the perfect door size to meet your needs. We understand the frustration of shopping for a door only to discover it doesn't fit properly. To ensure you get the right fit, follow our guide on how to measure for a new door size.
It's important to note that when replacing doors, you should not rely solely on the measurements of the existing door. Always base your measurements on the door frame itself. As the old saying goes, "measure twice, cut once," so remember to double-check your measurements.
When recording door measurements, consider the direction the door opens. Stand facing the door so it opens away from you, and note whether the hinges are on the right or left side. Left-side hinges indicate a left-hand opening door, while right-side hinges indicate a right-hand opening door.
You will need:
- Paper
- Pen Tools:
- Tape Measure
Step 1:
Measure the door width Take three measurements inside the door frame: at the top, middle, and bottom. The widest measurement determines the width of the door.
Use a tape measure to determine the width of the door frame at these three points, from left to right, and record the measurements.
Standard UK door widths include:
- 24 inches/610 mm
- 27 inches/686 mm
- 30 inches/762 mm
- 33 inches/838 mm
Step 2:
Measure the door height Measure the inside of each vertical side of the frame.
The longest length determines the required height, taking into account any floor covering.
Using a tape measure, determine the height of the door frame by measuring from the top corner to the bottom corner on each side. Record the measurement of the longest length.
Please note that for taller door frames, you may need assistance or a platform such as a chair to reach the top corners safely. It's advisable to have a family member or friend assist you during these measurements to ensure accuracy and safety.
Standard UK door heights are typically 6’6”/1981mm, but some doors may also be 2040mm.
Step 3: Measure the door thickness
If you are looking to purchase replacement doors and to keep the same frames,
you will need to replicate the door thickness, so make sure to take this measurement also.
- Use a tape measure to understand the thickness of the existing door. Run the tape measure along the edge of the door and record the measurement of the thickness.
- You should also measure the rebate in the frame, where the door sits when closed.
- The recording of both measurements should be a close match and fit with one of the UK standard door thicknesses: 35 mm is the most common, but some doors may also be 40mm. NB. 45mm thickness usually refers to fire doors.
